Upcycled Hoodie Workshop

We will start class with a discussion about the pattern (designed as an over sized pattern with off the shoulder sleeves, so less attention to body type is required), then we will discuss the fabric that you would like to work with and the desired layout, cut out your pieces and walk through seam allowance finishing (optional for this first hoodie). Once you have your cut out pieces you will be able to start sewing your hoodie!
Finishing is feasible but we will discuss how to finish your hoodie at home.

Supplies needed:
1. Your sewing machine in good working order and your knowledge of how to run it. This class is a beginner garment sewing class
but there will be areas of the hoodie where you will be sewing through 3 layers of fabric. So a familiarity of your machine is
required. Remember to bring your power cord, needles, bobbins, and foot pedal!
2. Pins, quilt clips, fabric scissors, and thread.
3. Paper scissors (for cutting out your pattern - while having the pattern cut out prior to class is recommended, we will talk about
the oversized fit of the pattern at the beginning of class. So if you prefer to wait to cut out your pattern, that is fine.)
4. Denim needles (best for sewing thicker or multiple layers of fabric).
5. Fabric for your hoodie (upcycled fabric is best. I recommend that it be thin vs thick for this project. Easier to work with. There will be a few areas where you will be sewing 3 layers. I also recommend that you NOT use your favorite quilt from your grandma. Your first hoodie may come with mistakes and changes and maybe a need to rip something out. Better to save Grandma’s quilts for later when you are more experienced. Another option is to find/buy an upcycled Kantha quilt from Amazon or Etsy. Your fabric needs to be approximately the size of a twin blanket, e.g., 65” X 90”. But your sleeves, hood (optional for this hoodie), and pocket, may be cut from a separate textile.
6. Optional: serger/pinking shears/zig-zag capable sewing machine. To ‘finish’ your seam allowances. Not a requirement for this project

Instructor: Shari Lentsch
Instructor Bio: Hi, my name is Shari and I’d like to say I’m threading life together one stitch at a time. Whether I’m quilting, sewing, weaving, embroidering, knitting, stringing beads, or working with silver, my hands are always busy turning simple materials into something meaningful and “my own”. I believe in the magic of making – where patience, creativity, and a little bit of whimsy come together in every piece. Like many of you, I learned sewing from my mom, quilting, baking bread and working with yarn from my grandmothers, how to use a welding torch from my dad, and science and math from my career in Microbiology. My current passions are turning quilts into coats, sweatshirts and vests, and trying to master the art of sourdough baking! Maybe I’ll bring a loaf to class
