Scrap Magic to Sully's Box Top!
In this adventurous beginner sewing class, Karen will teach you creative patchworking techniques for transforming smaller pieces of fabric into unique yardage for garment construction. You’ll learn how to arrange, piece, sew, and press your scraps into a cohesive new textile—and then use your newly created fabric to sew a simple Sully’s Upcycled Box Top during class.
Along the way, you’ll learn garment-friendly patchworking, hemming, and neckline finishing techniques using either hidden bias binding or a neckline facing. The Box Top is available in sizes XS–5XL, and you’ll receive the pattern after class so you can continue making more versions at home.
This is a fun, sustainable approach to sewing that helps reduce textile waste while giving forgotten scraps a whole new life. Bring your own woven scraps or use the assortment Karen provides in class at no additional cost.
Skills: Garment patchworking, piecing, pressing, hemming, hidden bias binding, and neckline facing.
Level: Adventurous Beginner. Participants should have working knowledge of their sewing machine and its basic functions.
Supplies: Sewing machine with foot control and power cord; thread; fabric scissors; pins or clips; and a bobbin. A serger is welcome but not required.
Fabric: Bring woven scraps only—cotton and cotton blends are recommended. Light- to midweight fabrics are best for your first project. Karen will also have plenty of scraps available for class.
